FAQ

Can the BKC be left outside?

Sure!  The coil is made out of weather resistant Nylon, threaded connections are all brass, and the fasteners are stainless.  Wire going from the tuning clip to the whip is the only thing that isn't stainless, and it is tinned copper.

I already have a tripod/radials/whip from a different coil, can I use it?

Absolutely, the Big Kansas Coil has standard 3/8-24 threads on top and bottom so you can use any standard tripod/whip from anyone else that also uses the industry standard.

Why is it called the Big Kansas Coil?

Good question.  I'm located here in Kansas, and was trying to come up with a name for it and thought, there is the 'Texas BugCatcher', why not a Kansas Coil?  It's larger in diameter than most other coils of this size, so it was called the Big Kansas Coil.

Can I use it as a mobile antenna?

I am not going to say that it is capable of being mounted on something that can take bird strikes at 80mph, with the potential of flying off and hitting other vehicles.  That is up to the end user to decide a proper mount and application for it.

How do I tune it?

Tuning is easiest with an antenna analyzer for the first couple of times to get it figured out.  If you don't have one, tune to the loudest noise and then finetune with the rigs SWR readout from there.  Make sure to write down your coil location and band for easy tuning next time!

What is the power rating on it?

I'm calling it 100w FT8 50% duty cycle.  I personally run mine at 100w ft8 with zero issues and haven't had any issues.  The Nylon 6 material it is made out of has a Heat Deflection Temperature above 300*F so it is considerably more heat resistant than other plastics.

What happens if I break it?

If you do break it, please send pictures and a description of what you were doing when it broke so I can redesign it better!  Assuming it isn't from gross neglect and abuse I'll send you the replacement.
